How to Avoid Pregnancy Gingivitis?

A look at pregnancy gingivitis and the best ways to prevent it happening

About 50% of women suffer from a condition known as pregnancy gingivitis that crops up when an expecting mother is

preparing for the birth of her baby. Pregnancy gingivitis occurs due to the increased level of hormone circulating through the system. Pregnancy gingivitis is completely treatable and preventable. It usually results in red, swollen gums and bleeding while brushing teeth.

Pregnancy gingivitis is completely treatable. There are several preventative measures that can be taken to stop it happening and plenty of treatments to stop it becoming worse. One of the first things that you need to do while pregnant is to keep up a good regime of oral hygiene. By brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing, you will keep the bacteria count in your mouth low and further lower your risk of gingivitis.

To give your teeth and extra clean, a mouth rinse is highly recommended. Mouth rinses are able to get in between teeth and reach places that brushes and dental floss cannot. Check with your doctor to get the most recommended brands but generally any anti microbial mouth rinse will be expectable.

Giving your tongue a good scrape before you go to bed can also help fight off pregnancy gingivitis. It sounds disgusting but it is highly effective. The tongue is a breeding ground for bacteria. It also attracts all of the food and drinks that you have had throughout the day. This combined with the warm moist environment of the tongues surface make a virtual playground for bacteria. Scraping off the debris every night will give them one less reason to celebrate. It will reduce the amount of bacteria attracted to the tongue and the chances of pregnancy gingivitis.

A good diet is highly recommended for a good pregnancy. Did you know that many of the things that you do to help your pregnancy will also help reduce the chances of pregnancy gingivitis. Exercise is something that you need to discuss with your doctor, however it is recommended for the overwhelming majority of pregnant women. Exercise is good for the body in general; however it can also help the fight against decay and gingivitis. Exercise reduces the bodies stress levels. Stress increases the amount of bacteria in the mouth. By reducing the amount of stress through exercise you are keeping your body healthy as well as your teeth and gums.

Eating foods rich in vitamin C have several benefits. First of all they taste great. Second of all they help fight off colds and flues. Finally, they are great for good oral hygiene. The acids in these foods help keep bacteria at bay. They also have natural cleaners that reduce the amount of plaque on the teeth. Eating things like oranges, lemons, kiwis and mangoes does more good than many people realize?

Anyone who has ever suffered from a kidney infection was likely told to drink lots of cranberry juice. The properties in cranberries help clear infection and give the inner organs a good cleaning. Cranberries can also help fight against pregnancy gingivitis. The cranberries actually form a seal in the teeth that prevent bacteria and plaque sticking to it. Eating the actual cranberries is the most effective method. Many juices have added sugar and actually will do more harm that good. If you must have juice then make sure it is from a concentrate.

For years we have been hearing about how lying in the sun is extremely bad for us. Well extended exposure to the sun is still considered unhealthy, however 15-20 minutes a day of sun exposure is actually good for your oral health. The sun is the most efficient source of vitamin D. Vitamin D helps to rebuild connective tissue in the gums. This is highly effective in the fight against pregnancy gingivitis. If the sun is not for you then vitamin D can be found in dairy products. Cheeses and milks are the best options.

Finally, if you chew sugarless gum, you could be fighting pregnancy gingivitis without even realizing it. Chewing gum increases the salvia flow in the mouth. This helps to clean the mouth and add minerals back into the teeth. Dental gums are the best but as long as the gum is sugarless it should be fine.

Pregnancy gingivitis occurs in about half of all women preparing to give birth. It is irritating and even painful, however it is treatable. The first step is to do everything possible to prevent it happening. Keeping a regime of good oral hygiene, diet and exercise will benefit your body and mouth. If pregnancy gingivitis still occurs you doctor or dentists can recommend a good treatment program.
