Spotting can be defined as light bleeding similar to that of the woman’s monthly menstrual period and this
spotting may happen at any time during any phase of pregnancy,
but it is
generally seen during the first trimester. Although there are rarest, chances but one should also not ignore the odds of possible complications that might happen during this condition. Some pregnant women experience of lower backache or stomachache accompanying to spotting. About 20% of women may complain about some vaginal spotting or bleeding during their first three months or trimester of pregnancy.
It is not always that you are alarmed for the vaginal spotting during pregnancy period. For instance, there might be light bleeding around 7-10 days after a woman has conceived and that can be brought on by the implantation of the ovum that is located in the uterus. Since any kind of bleeding is one of the most common warning signals of having miscarriage, any spotting or bleeding should immediately be reported to your gynecologist.

Normal spotting is something that occurs at the very end of woman’s one menstrual period or cycle. The bleeding for one to two days after 3-5 days can be considered as normal but if it occurs later than that, it may show some pathologic problem in a woman.
The other normal condition is having spotting, which occurs in the middle of woman’s menstrual period or spotting that occurs around 10-14 days prior to the beginning of the next menstrual period. This kind of spotting can occur during the period of ovulation. One can consider of having a spot of blood during ovulation as an excellent sign of fertility. It is thought that mid-cycle spotting occurs for reasons. First reason could be when the ovum bursts through the follicle then there will be little bleeding. This blood will be expelled out through vaginal track and show up as “spotting”. The other reason may be that during ovulation, the level of the hormone estrogens go high, and this may prompt the uterus to shed a bit of lining that can appear in the form of “spotting.”
Spotting, which occurs about seven days before the menstrual cycle is due – and the one, which only lasts for less than a day – is generally considered as implantation spotting. This can be the result of fertilized egg tunneling into the uterine lining. Another reason of getting implantation spotting is due to a little rise in levels of hormone estrogen and fall in hormone progesterone before the corpus luteum takes over the progesterone production. The corpus luteum takes over the production of the hormone progesterone only when the implanted fertilized ovum warns the woman’s body that the conception has occurred and that the lining should be maintained well. One should be aware that spotting, which continues for more days is not an implantation spotting.
Abnormal spotting may last for several days. It is quite unusual to spot days before woman’s menstrual period is due. The causes of having abnormal spotting may vary. One of the most commonly seen causes of having spotting several days before the menstrual cycle is due is having reduced levels of the hormone called progesterone. This is the hormone, which helps to maintain the uterine lining for getting conception and when the level of the hormone progesterone drops, the woman has menstrual period.
In women who are having deficiency in the hormone progesterone, they will notice spotting several days to a week before their menstrual period is due. This may also end up in minor infertility and early miscarrying. Another reason for spotting is it can occur due to uterine fibroids those is really harmless, but they need to be observed continuously. Few other reasons for spotting include disease like endometriosis; contraceptive pills can also be a reason for spotting but as rare case. The most hazardous reasons for getting the spotting include sexually transmitted diseases and some types of cancers those are really difficult to deal with.
In the early stages of conception, spotting may occur when the fertilized ovum has located on the wall of the uterus. Some of the vaginal infections may also cause the spotting. The spotting may be an early sign of pregnancy and therefore, you should not get your sight off it. Some of the infections such as Chlamydia can also bring spotting. After 37th week of pregnancy, spotting may be a sign that gives us a signal that the cervix has started becoming softened. Spotting can be a significant sign of getting premature labor or the detachment of the placenta from the uterus.
However, apart from all those possible causes, some women complain of spotting that is unexplained, generally with no complications. Any of the spotting you have, you should see your doctor or gynecologist as early as possible, even if just to get assured that everything is fine with your body.
