It could be most amazing for a mother is she gets bonus in terms of a baby! Isn’t is something bear one and get one free! Well, certainly not. Bearing two babies in one womb could be difficult as compared to the single fetus. But the sure thing is that mother is very happy when she is informed of carrying two or more babies at a time. Twin pregnancy can occur one in hundreds of pregnant women and this makes it rarely seen pregnancy. However, the number has been increasing eventually. Many scientists and researches claim that they can certainly ‘bring’ twins into the womb.
It is often seen that women are delaying their pregnancies well into their 30s and beyond. The age-related hormonal changes can cause more than one egg to be released at a time. This will boost the odds of conceiving nonidentical twins or fraternal twins in better language.
One may wonder how multiples are made? Fraternal twins – the most commonly seen situation occur when two separate eggs are fertilized by two different sperms. When the fertilization completes, the each of the twins will have its own placenta and amniotic sac from which, they will get nourishment. Gender wise, they could be anything like two boys or two girls or one boy and one girl. Genetic wise, they are no more alike than any of the other babies.
The identical twins could be the result of single fertilized egg splits and develops into two fetuses. Identical twins may be supplied by common placenta but each of the fetus will generally have separate amniotic sac. Genetically, these two babies are identical and they will be looking as carbon copies.
There is no doubt that the twins are diagnosed before they get delivered. With the advance technology, you will come to know about twins in very early stages of pregnancy. The first clue, very often, is the larger look of the abdomen than usual. It is quite understandable anatomy that two fetus occupy more space. There will be more than one fetal heartbeat probably at two different sites. There are certain blood tests that can also give clue of having two fetus.
The condition is confirmed with ultrasound. Ultrasound can also gather information about amniotic fluid, placenta and the positioning of the fetuses. Regular examination is therefore needed especially for a mother carrying two fetuses.
Along with the joy, twin pregnancy brings responsible job to a mother. The pregnancy is not as usual as the normal one and therefore, it requires more care and delicacy to handle it. Right from the nutrition, everything should be doubled including the care. There could be more side effects and they may intensify common pregnancy complaints like nausea, vomiting, heartburn, fatigue and insomnia. Abdominal pain, dyspnea (difficulty in breathing) and pressure on the pelvic or pubic bone are not uncommon.
Twin pregnancy requires more care and therefore, a mother will need to see healthcare provider very often as compare to the normal one fetus pregnancy. The regular checkup will determine the quantity of amniotic fluid, the situation of fetus and placenta and even internal organs of the babies inside including most important organ – heart. The fetal heart sounds can easily be checked with ultrasound. The technology also offers the measurement of the fetus inside the womb.
Twin pregnancy is to be nourished properly as there are two lives inside the womb and they desperately need proper nutrients for their development. More folic acid, calcium, iron and other nutrients are required very much. One should not forget to take extra vitamins in case of twin pregnancy. Your healthcare provider may suggest you extra iron supply for you and your fetuses’ blood.
There should also be more weight gain in case of twin pregnancy. The two fetuses will divide everything including the extra weight required for pregnancy. For twins, typically make 35-45 pounds more. This may take up to 2700 calories a day more than what a normal woman requires.
Apart from all these, extra care, proper exercises, traveling hazard, and routine work is to be altered as per the instruction given by your doctor.
