It is obvious that if there are twins, they will share everything and so the health. To give birth to healthy twins can be labeled as an achievement. Twin pregnancy can bring complications. Few of the common are described here:
- High blood pressure: A pregnant lady carrying more than one fetus is susceptible to have high blood pressure or hypertension. This may be seen in any phase of pregnancy. The condition gets worse if it turns to preeclampsia in which, even death may occur. Generally the medicines are given as early as possible and the care is taken intensively. Close monitoring of mother and fetuses is required and therefore, a mother should be hospitalized the moment she develops any symptoms indicating high blood pressure. The symptoms may include headache, dizziness, numbness, nausea or vomiting or blurred vision.
- Cesarean birth: More than half of the total two-fetuses carrying mothers will require cesarean. This is because these two babies may not have head-down position, which is considered normal. The positioning will be different from what is required to make a normal delivery. However, the positioning of the babies can be diagnosed much earlier with the help of ultrasound.
- Preterm labor: Most of the pregnancies last from 38-42 weeks and for the twin pregnancy, 37-39 weeks is optimal. Preterm labor can be defined as contractions that begin to open the cervix before 37th week. With the help of medical science, it is quite possible to stop preterm labor with fluids, rest, medications or a minor surgery.
- Preterm birth: If preterm labor is failed to treat in a proper manner, twins can come out earlier than expected. This is the most common problem in twins. Preterm birth itself is a major problem that brings lots of other hazardous conditions such as low birth weight (LBW), learning disabilities, delayed milestones, underdeveloped organs of the baby, icterus and other neonatal problems that require emergency care and twins may require life-supporting systems in their initial stages of life.
- The twin-twin transfusion: This is typical with identical twins. It is quite possible for a blood vessel present in the placenta to connect two fetuses’ circulatory systems and therefore, the distribution of the blood may be altered. One fetus may receive more than the other may. These babies are delivered as soon as they are detected with the same.
- Bleeding after delivery: Since the twins will be having two placentas and amniotic sacs or a single but large placenta, there are chances to have profuse bleeding soon after the delivery of the babies. However, the situation is very well known to the doctors and they are prepared for the same. Heavy blood loss may make mother weak and anemic for which, she further requires medications and proper treatment.
Overall, twin pregnancy requires extra care for mother and for fetuses. You should work
